MIB III

Saw MIB 3 today. The film fits very nicely into the MIB franchise. On par with the first film and better than the forgettable second one.

Part 3 drags a bit in the middle but is helped by a clever climax and the element of time travel.

I always feel like these movies should be funnier than they are. This 3rd film has only a couple of mild chuckles. And Will Smith does all the heavy lifting.

I'd rate this installment a 7 out of 10.

Masterpiece Theater

Tonight was the last episode of Sherlock (season 2) and my head is spinning! What a terrific series.
The way the stories are told is so fresh and challenging. Just brilliant writing.

Dinosaur Hall

I love dinosaurs and I love museums, so it's odd it took me so long to see the new Dinosaur Hall at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum.
Well, now I've seen it and it's pretty great. I took some video while I walked around and posted it on my youtube site. Check it out:

Dark Shadows

While Dark Shadows is a niche movie, something only a small margin of people are going to embrace, I did like it. I warmed to this oddball family soap opera and enjoyed its mannered pace. Visually rich in details and good-natured in its humor.
I'd rate it an 8 out of 10.

Happy Mother's Day

Check out this amazing photo.

Avengers

Saw The Avengers tonight at a pack theater in Glendale.
I was truly impressed. I didn't know if Joss Whedon could honestly pull off such an epic movie...it's a tall order to be the big "payoff" to Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America.
Well, he did it in spades.
A Comic Book movie that feels like a comic book movie should. Big, funny, thrilling, and fearless.
All the characters are electric separately and as a team and they all get a moment to shine.
Far and away the best Marvel super hero movie. This is how it's done. I'd rate it a 10 out of 10.

Trailers before the feature were:
Frankenweenie
Brave
Battleship
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Dark Knight Rises

I think this is going to be a great summer for movies.

70th Anniversary

I went with a bunch of people from work this evening to see Casablanca on the big screen. It was a special, one night showing of Casablanca in honor of it's 70th anniversary.
It was the first time I've seen the movie on a big screen and full audience. We had a great time and the movie looked terrific. It's maybe as close to perfect as a movie can get.

More info on the screening.

Movie review

I saw and enjoyed The Cabin in the Woods this weekend.

Unlike many of the reviews I read about this movie, I didn't think the "twist" was all that mind blowing. I think you can kinda guess what this movie is all about. I won't spoil it if you really have no idea.

I've seen movies sorta like this, but what sets this one above the others is its quick wit and an amazingly satisfying 3rd Act.

Crazy, scary, fun. I give Cabin in the Woods an 8 out of 10.

Looking ahead to the Summer Movies

I picked up the latest EntertainmentWeekly for their Summer Movie Preview.
So many interesting movies are coming out this season and my guess is that it'll be one of the biggest box office years ever.
Of the movies listed in EW, here's the ones I'm looking forward to the most:

Moonrise Kingdom
Dark Shadows
The Avengers
The Dictator
Brave
To Rome With Love
Prometheus
Safety Not Guaranteed
The Amazing Spider-Man
Ruby Sparks
Paranorman

Franchise burnout

Studios love movie franchises', but here's a few of the ones I'm done with. Thank you, I've had enough.

GI Joe
Hunger Games
The Bourne movies
Chris Nolan Batman movies
Transformers
Planet of the Apes
Avatar
Despicable Me
Twilight
Final Destination

Weekend

Yesterday we had thunder and crazy-heavy rains, but today and this weekend it looks to be drying out with warmer temps.
It was bad yesterday but nothing compared to the tornados in the plains states.

I've been catching up with movies (iTunes, pay per view) I missed in theaters.
The Immortals. Beautiful art direction but the story was weak. 4 out of 10.
The Darkest Hour. Awful. 3 out of 10.
